Exploring Hidden Alternatives to Popular Destinations

Ready to break away from the crowds and explore hidden gems that offer a truly unique travel experience? From secret paradises nestled off the beaten path to culturally rich towns brimming with authenticity, these are some of our top picks for popular destination alternatives.

Instead of Lake Como try Lugano, Locarno, or Lake Garda

Lake Como’s combination of breathtaking scenery, charming towns, historic attractions, and culinary delights make it a top destination for travelers. However, there are other nearby destinations that can still satisfy those seeking relaxation, adventure, and cultural experiences, with plenty of luxury accommodations to boot.

Lugano, nestled in the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland, offers a delightful blend of Swiss flair and Italian charm. The region enjoys a mild, Mediterranean climate, making it a pleasant destination year-round and offering lots of hiking, biking, and water sports. Museums, galleries, and theaters showcase both local and international talent, and the city offers excellent shopping opportunities from designer boutiques to quaint local shops. A mix of Swiss and Italian cuisine make the area equally enticing with dishes like risotto, polenta, and Swiss chocolate.

Located on the northern shore of Lake Maggiore, Locarno boasts stunning views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. The old town of Locarno is filled with narrow cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and magnetic piazzas. Visitors can wander through the town, explore its medieval churches, and soak in the atmosphere. The city also offers a wide range of outdoor activities for adventure seekers, including swimming, sailing, and windsurfing on Lake Maggiore. Explore their many botanical gardens and enjoy a diverse collection of plants from around the world in a lakeside setting, including those at the Brissago Islands Botanical Garden. From Locarno, visitors can take day trips to nearby attractions such as the lovely town of Ascona, the Verzasca Valley, or the Centovalli Railway.

Lake Garda, located in Northern Italy, is the largest lake in the country and is well-known for its natural beauty. The striking mountain range surrounding Lake Garda provides a picturesque backdrop to its crystal-clear waters, olive groves, and quaint lakeside towns. Visitors can explore the rugged cliffs of the northern shore or the gentle hills and vineyards of the south. Lake Garda’s mild climate and reliable winds make it an ideal destination for water sports like sailing, windsurfing, kite surfing, and kayaking. Along the shores, visitors can explore ancient castles, Roman ruins, and historic churches, as well as museums showcasing the region's art and history. The Lake Garda region is known for its delicious cuisine, featuring fresh seafood from the lake and locally grown produce. Another plus? Visitors to Lake Garda can take day trips to nearby cities such as Verona, Venice, and Milan.

Swap Greece’s Cycladic Islands for its Ionian Islands

The Cycladic Islands are considered a must-visit destination for many travelers seeking an unforgettable Greek island experience, but the Ionian Islands also offer a perfect combination of cultural richness, delicious cuisine, and warm hospitality.

The Ionian Islands boast some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, from popular beaches like Navagio Beach on Zakynthos to lesser-known gems like Myrtos Beach on Kefalonia. Beyond the beaches, the Ionian Islands are characterized by lush greenery, rolling hills, and dramatic cliffs. Visitors can explore olive groves, vineyards, and forests, as well as spectacular viewpoints overlooking the sea. Historic sites include Venetian fortresses, Byzantine churches, and archaeological ruins, plus villages with traditional architecture and local customs. Indulge in local specialties with fresh, flavorful ingredients such as seafood, grilled meats, stuffed vegetables, and of course, feta cheese. Don't forget to try the local wine and olive oil! Swimming, snorkeling, diving, sailing, hiking, biking, as well as exploring caves, gorges, and natural parks are just some of the activities available on the islands. Best of all, the Ionian Islands are conveniently located close to each other, making island hopping easy and enjoyable.

Consider Bodrum, Turkey Instead of the South of France

The Southern coast of France is one of Europe’s most enchanting regions. Destinations like Nice, Cannes, Saint-Tropez, and Antibes attract sun-seekers and water sports enthusiasts from all over the world. You may think there’s no substitute for this trendy vacation spot, but lesser known Bodrum in Turkey is an incredible alternative.

Located on the Aegean coast of Turkey, Bodrum offers an ideal balance of history, culture, and dazzling natural surroundings. Known for its striking azure waters and scenic landscapes, Bodrum boasts golden sand beaches where visitors can cruise along the coast to discover hidden coves, secluded beaches, and delightful villages. Bodrum’s cosmopolitan atmosphere includes a lively nightlife, bustling markets, and trendy cafes and restaurants. Whether you're interested in exploring traditional Turkish cuisine or sampling international dishes, Bodrum offers a wide range of dining options to suit every palate. Historical landmarks include the ancient Bodrum Castle, which dates back to the 15th century and houses the Museum of Underwater Archeology. The city also hosts various festivals, events, and art exhibitions throughout the year, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in Turkish culture and traditions. Bodrum is a paradise for shoppers, with its bustling bazaars, boutique shops, and local markets offering everything from handmade crafts and textiles to souvenirs and jewelry.

This Galentine’s Day is a perfect excuse to ping your friends and plan your adventure together. Go ahead and treat yourselves to an adventure that’s all about relaxation, fun, and friendship. The first question to ask the group is—how much time do you have? From a weekend escape to a bucket-list checkmark—you have plenty of choices depending on the availability of your friends. Here we go over some ideas based on three lengths of stay. Remember, these are just some ideas to spark your wanderlust, the world is full of adventure just waiting for you. I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Cliff House in Maine . If you are thinking, “recently,” and then looking at your calendar—yes, in January. Some say that Maine in the winter is a best-kept secret, and I now agree. It’s a reminder that off-season travel can still make for a magical experience and the Cliff House is one of the best places to find that magic for yourself. The Cliff House is open year-round but only open Thursday-Sunday during the off-season (most of December through April, check the website for exact dates). When you step into the lobby, you might immediately notice the floor-to-ceiling windows with magnificent ocean views, all complimented by an immersive maritime aesthetic. The feeling extends to the guest rooms. My group stayed in the newest addition, Ledges (completed in 2018). When you reach your room—you can continue to watch the magnificent winter waves crash against the cliffs because all the rooms are oceanside. Each floor had fresh coffee and water stations stocked with a variety of farm-fresh milk and apples. It was a delightful touch.

No matter how many times you visit, there’s a certain magic to France that never fades. For me, this trip wasn’t just about exploring—it was about savoring: the buttery richness of Chantilly cream, the effervescence of perfectly chilled champagne, and the quiet luxury of a château at sunset. My 5-night educational trip with Relais & Châteaux offered all that and more, blending indulgence with discovery in a way only France can. Here’s a glimpse into my unforgettable journey.
